What is Rider Connect?

Rider Connect is a dedicated community initiative bringing riders face-to-face with Cherriots staff. Held inside the Customer Service Lobby at the Downtown Transit Center (DTC), this dedicated space serves as a forum for you to share your experiences, highlight your favorite routes, and let us know how transit impacts your daily life.

Riders on a Cherriots bus.

Why Are We Doing This?

Behind every bus route and schedule is a person. While we track ridership numbers and operational data, authentic rider experiences tell the real story of public transit.

By sharing your perspective, you help us showcase the human impact of Cherriots, build public trust, and demonstrate the vital role transit plays in connecting our community.

With consent, selected stories and quotes may be featured in:Quote from Cherriots rider, Marja Byers: Cherriots services allow me to get to my appointments, attend church, or participate in community and cultural events like World Beat and the Saturday Market, which I really enjoy.... The price predictability of public transportation is essential to being fully included in my community."

  • Social media spotlights (featuring real rider stories and photos)
  • Cherriots website features and highlights

Rider Profiles

Deserie Deleon, Rider Connect

Deserie Deleon

Deserie Deleon came to Salem in 2017. When she first moved to Salem she was living in a single car household and started riding the bus whenever the car was not available. She shared that without Cherriots, getting around would be much harder. Deserie uses the bus to get to work, stores, and the YMCA. She says “All of the drivers are very friendly and they help with any questions I have. The driver's customer service is always very good.”

Josiah Duarte, Rider Connect

Josiah Duarte

Josiah Duarte rides every single day, sometimes by himself, and sometimes with his whole family. He likes to ride Cherriots Regional buses out of town, and the Route 1X to Wilsonville is his favorite. Josiah has been riding the bus nearly his whole life and appreciates his interactions  with the operators. He recalled how one operator, who has since retired, used to greet him every day with “How you doing tomorrow?”

Lisa Roe, Rider Connect

Lisa Roe

Lisa Roe uses the system about two times a week to travel from Silverton to Monmouth, allowing her to get to her worksites. Occasionally, she rides the Cherriots Local system to get to Costco and other locations around town. Lisa and her son appreciate having Wi-Fi on the bus and they also use the bike racks as they bring their bikes quite often. Lisa wants people to know that the buses are clean and sanitary and that the drivers are friendly!

Priscilla Perez, Rider Connect

Priscilla Perez

Priscilla Perez is pretty new to Salem and public transit. She just started riding Cherriots this summer after losing her car. Priscilla got her first Cherriots pass with help from Center for Hope and Safety and has been riding the bus ever since! Meanwhile, her daughter has been riding for free with the Youth Zero Pass. Since getting a job, Priscilla is now able to buy her own pass after and uses the bus to get to work each day. Priscilla explained that, “one person helping me with a pass led to being able to feel a part of my community.”

Tyler Johnson, Rider Connect

Tyler Johnson

Tyler Johnson started using Cherriots service again two months ago. He takes multiple trips a day to meetings and the grocery store. Tyler appreciates that Cherriots has weekend service now, as he used to ride Cherriots years ago before weekend service. He says, “Every single time I ride the bus, the drivers have been very warm and inviting,” which he said makes for a pleasant experience.
